The Idea

People say adoption is difficult. But that is not the whole story.

Black children are overrepresented in foster care and adopted at lower rates. Lemar’s talk challenges us to reconsider what makes adoption “hard” and what becomes possible when adults are willing to love the child who is actually waiting.

Three Truths

Love can interrupt the cycle.

01 · The System

Children do not all experience adoption equally.

Race, age, sibling groups and special needs can shape who gets chosen and who remains in care.

02 · The Cost

Foster care can become a pipeline instead of a bridge.

Youth who age out face higher risks of incarceration and early pregnancy and lower levels of education.

03 · The Possibility

A loving family can change the direction of a life.

Adoption is not about creating a genetically matched set. It is about building a family held together by commitment and love.

The Question
“Are you the person they’re waiting for?
